Abstract
Religion ideally serve as a guide for
human life. All religions teach goodness and promise happiness and salvation.
But the diversity of religious teachings and interpretations by adherents can
lead to an attitude that does not respect the views of others so prone to
conflict. Buddhism is believed to teach interfaith tolerance. This paper aims
to describe the values of tolerance according to the teachings of Buddhism
contained in the Tipitaka scriptures.
This paper is a literature review with a
hermeneutic approach. The main data sources of the research are the Tipitaka
scriptures, and various references related to inter-religious tolerance.
Technique of collecting data by collecting suttas (Buddha’s discourses) in
Tipitaka scriptures which is relevant to the theme of conflict and tolerance
among religious people. Data analysis was done by hermeneutic approach.
The results show that Buddhist teachings
in the Tipitaka Scriptures contain tolerant values. The suttas show the
Buddha's advice, actions, and attitudes along with his disciples who apply
values of tolerance in social relationships between believers.
